BECOME A STORY COUNTY SOIL AND WATER CONSERVATION DISTRICT COMMISSIONER!
Concerned about the water quality in Story County? You can make a difference by filing before
August 30 to run as a Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) Commissioner. District Commissioners whose terms are expiring include: Marilyn Loupee, Washington Twp. and David Obrecht, Sherman Twp. Successors will be elected at the general election November 7, 2006 and will be sworn in January 2007.
Any qualified elector residing in the soil and water conservation district, which is all of Story County including cities and towns, is eligible for the office of commissioner, except that no more than one commissioner may be a resident of any one township. Incumbent commissioners are Erwin Klaas, Franklin Twp; Jerry Radke, Nevada Twp; and Dave Van Waus, New Albany Twp. Therefore, residents of these townships would not be eligible for office at this time.
Prospective candidates seeking the office of SWCD Commissioner must file nomination petitions in the same manner as for other elective positions at the general election, except that no political party is designated. Nomination petitions can be obtained from the County Auditor. These petitions, signed by 25 eligible electors, must be filed with the County Auditor at the Story County Courthouse no later than August 30, 2006.
Individuals elected in November 2006 will serve a term of four years. Commissioners meet monthly to discuss the business of the District. In addition, Commissioners are community leaders in Resource Management, providing guidance and information to their friends and neighbors.
Assistant Commissioners may be appointed to serve as non-voting members of the District and participate in the work of the District. Service as an Assistant Commissioner is a good way to learn about soil and water conservation programs and to gain experience.
Commissioners and Assistant Commissioners are volunteers and may receive compensation for expenses related to attending meetings and other activities of the Board. For further information, contact the Story SWCD at 515-382-2217.
